I’ve been slacking on the month-to-month stats for quite a while now, but I may have to revisit those again for the month of October. Without realizing it, perhaps subconsciously, it seems that I’ve been balancing my zeal for the new Spring 1990 release with selections from the Pigpen era. Today’s Good Lovin’ is one of the latter.
The main motivation behind this pick was that it had been a while since I’d listened to Download Series, Vol. 2 and it had the song I was looking for. Of course, once I gave it a closer listen I was pleased with the choice. The difference between this arrangement and the post-1976 arrangement with Bobby singing couldn’t be more different. Granted, by that time there was less psychedelia in much of their playing, but that’s what really sets this apart for me. The transformation from pop song, to space blues, and back to pop song is an amazing metamorphosis in such a short period of time. When you figure that there’s a minute or two of drums in there as well it’s remarkable how much this band could accomplish in a given period of time.
