I have a few hobbies. Music is certainly one of them, but with concert prices nowadays, late starts, and having kids at home I don’t get out to shows as often as I used to, or as much as I’d like. Most of my entertainment dollars go toward purchasing CDs and sports. I have season tickets to the University of Denver men’s lacrosse team and this weekend they had a pair of games. Kudos for my wife for letting me get out of the house guilt free for most of the weekend to indulge one of my passions.
For those who don’t follow the sport, DU is a top 10 team in men’s Division 1 lacrosse, and it’s safe to say they left their opponents singing the blues this weekend. Saturday’s tilt against Marist ended 15-9 in favor of DU, and Sunday’s match against Canisius saw a final score of 14-3 in favor of the Pioneers once again. This song just popped into my head as I reflected on the weekend’s games.
Nothing fancy in the execution of this version of You Win Again at the outset. I like how Bobby takes on a bit more of the lead work on this number, and Keith switches between playing swinging eighths and tickling the ivories like a barman. The main solo section starts off with Jerry, but it doesn’t seem like he’s quite feeling it and Keith takes over. His grand piano really works on these classic blues numbers and give them an really authentic sound.
This is a short number so there’s not a ton of detail, but Keith really shines here.
Complete Setlist 4/26/72
Totally unrelated, but I listened to Paul Rodgers – The Royal Sessions this weekend as well and really enjoyed his take on these Soul/R&B classics. Of course, no one can match the great Otis Redding, but as far as covers go I enjoyed them. Speaking of soul greats, check out this cover of Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come by Soulive and Derek Trucks.
